FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) -On Wednesday, the U.S. issued the third round of stimulus checks to 85% percent of people as part of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan.
“We got all of them right away,” Chelsie Boykin of Williston, North Dakota says. “We didn’t have a problem luckily.”
COVID-relief is showing up as money in the bank, $1,400 for many North Dakotans and Minnesotans like Boykin.
“It helps us,” she says. “We’re finally catching up on some bills we needed to pay and just couldn’t.”
The first batch totaling $242-billion and they were mostly in the form of direct deposit.
“I was very irritated,” Vanessa Hartnell of Warroad, Minnesota says. “All those people have already got theirs, what about me? I’m a person who works all the time. Where is mine?”
Payments were first sent to eligible taxpayers who gave direct deposit information on their 2019, 2020 returns. Others are in for a longer wait.
“My expectations were high on getting it right away since I got the other two right away,” Brittany Lehman says.
Nearly seven-million returns have not been processed, leaving many who filed their taxes waiting. That’s more than three times the number of delays with the I.R.S. compared to last year.
That’s because right now, I.R.S. resources are also being used to send that new round of stimulus checks. Also, after a year of emergency COVID-related support for Americans, the I.R.S. is dealing with more questions and complications.
The I.R.S. says it processes most tax returns within 21 days but acknowledges some take longer. There are already calls to extend the Apr. 15 deadline, like last year when it was pushed to July.
“I just hope those who really need it get their checks soon,” Linda Neppl of West Fargo says.
Additional batches and payments will be made in the coming weeks. Those checks will be sent by direct deposit and through the mail as a check or debit card. The I.R.S. has until the end of 2021 to distribute these checks.
