HAMPTON, Va. - Meeting strangers to buy or sell merchandise is common in the days of social media marketplaces, but it can also be a risky practice.

Officers from the Hampton Police Division are reminding people of their safe exchange location at 40 Lincoln Street, in front of the police headquarters building. It’s monitored 24 hours by surveillance cameras.

Officers spoke about potential red flags.

“If you are a buyer or seller and you choose to use 40 Lincoln Street as your area to want to meet to complete the transaction and the buyer or the seller, [and] they don't want to come out, that's a red flag - that people don't want to meet in front of a police department, and it's possibly a scam or something dangerous,” said Officer Ernest Williams.
