Kate Pierson of The B-52’s is selling her Catskills motel for $2.2 million - Times Union

The Woodstock-area motel Kate Pierson has described as her “cabin fever fantasy” is now for sale, listed at $2.2 million. The B-52’s singer, known for hits like “Love Shack” and “Roam,” has owned and operated Kate’s Lazy Meadow motel for 18 years along with her wife Monica Coleman.

The 10-unit motel sits on over 6.5 acres of field and forest and is fronted by a secluded section of the Esopus Creek, popular for tubing and fishing. Each cabin boasts a unique interior with mid-century modern décor, including vintage cabinets and colorful Frigidaire’s and stoves — all carefully curated by Pierson and Coleman.

The cabin motel wasn’t always this way. When Pierson first came across the property, the 1950s-era cabins needed to be restored. Pierson told Bloomberg she “never had a vision of owning a hotel,” until she was driving down Route 28 in the Catskills and saw the “for sale” sign and pulled over. After researching the property more, and learning it was built in 1952, she went for it. She worked with Bill Stewart, of William Stewart Design in Atlanta and New York, along with other artist friends to restore the property.

Inspirations from The B-52’s made its way into the motel too. Phillip Marberry and Scott Walker, known as the duo Marberry Walker whose home was the music video set for “Love Shack,” designed and installed tiles and ceramic bubble art for the cabins.

“Kate’s Lazy Meadow has been a labor of love for both me and my wife Monica — who has been the one really running the business for the last 18 years,” said Pierson in a written statement. “We love it so and we’ve put so much of ourselves into it. We’ve enjoyed the property as our own little ‘love shack’ when we’ve hosted a few family and friends gatherings through the years. But now it’s time for Monica — a gifted ceramic artist and Jewelry artisan — and me to focus on our artistic endeavors.”

The motel was listed by Elizabeth Peters of Heather Croner Real Estate. It will come fully furnished and turn-key ready, similar to The Herwood, a Woodstock female-musician themed motel that sold within three weeks recently. With The Herwood, real estate agent Daniel Romero said he “showed it to a lot of buyers” who all had high interest because of its high profitability and no work needed. Peters said she expects the same interest for Kate’s Lazy Meadow.

“Turnkey properties with unique pedigree are quite attractive to commercial buyers now, especially properties near Woodstock like Kate’s Lazy Meadow, which has an incredible rock-n-roll history,” wrote Peters in an email. Since the property hit the market, she has received calls from buyers with interest specifically because it is owned and operated by Pierson and Coleman. “The love they have poured into this place is readily apparent from the moment you step foot onto this land; be it the careful landscaping, the well-maintained buildings and the detailed attention to retro decor and creating cozy and fun spaces to inhabit be it inside or out.”

Ideally, Pierson said they would like to “pass the baton” to someone who can use the property to its full potential, whether that is as a wedding venue or a family compound. Currently, the motel is fully booked (operating only on the weekends) until September, and Pierson and Coleman will operate it until then. Whoever buys the property is welcome to turn it into whatever they wish.

Peters stated that Pierson’s trademark or brand won’t go with it, which is different from The Herwood, whose previous owners sold the entire brand with the property.

So far, Peters has seen interest from a mix of buyers, ranging from some who are in the hospitality businesses to private buyers interested in creating a compound.

Pierson is working on putting out her second solo album this year and will spend time focusing on the future projects for The B-52’s. She also owns and operates Kate’s Lazy Cabin in Lake Hill, New York and Kate’s Lazy Desert in California.
