Members of Congress are free to advocate for another round of coronavirus stimulus checks and President Joe Biden will consider any proposal made, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Thursday.
“The president is certainly open to a range of ideas,” Psaki said at her daily press briefing. “He’s happy to hear from a range of ideas on what would be most effective and what’s most important to the economy moving forward.”
Legislation introduced by some House Democrats, including Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-12th Dist., would provide monthly payments of $2,000 a month until the coronavirus pandemic-induced economic downturn is over.
In addition, 21 Senate Democrats, including Cory Booker, have called for monthly checks until the economy recovered.
And an online petition has garnered more than 2.3 million signatures.
But Biden did not include a fourth round of direct payments in his $4 trillion spending proposals for infrastructure, education and child care.
“He’s also proposed what he thinks is going to be the most effective for the short term, for putting people back to work, to getting through this pivotal period of time, and also to making us more competitive over the long term,” Psaki said

At the press briefing, Psaki also mentioned the enhanced Child Tax Credit, which will provide payments of $3,600 for children under 6 and up to $3,000 per child between ages 6 and 17 to most families. Biden has proposed extending the higher credit through 2025, while Booker and other senators said they want to make the higher payments permanent.
And Psaki cited the debate over restoring the full deduction for state and local income and property taxes. The $10,000 deduction cap in the 2017 Republican tax law disproportionately affected taxpayers in New Jersey and other high-tax states, including millions of middle-class homeowners.
Congressional Democrats in March approved $1,400 checks to most Americans over unanimous Republican opposition as part of Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus law.
