AKRON, Ohio — An Akron man was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison for selling carfentanil, a powerful synthetic opioid, that authorities say led to the 2019 death of a Green man.

Ellis Wilson, 27, was sentenced by federal Judge Dan Aaron Polster after Wilson pleaded guilty in July to distribution of carfentanil with an enhanced penalty, distribution of carfentanil, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

On April 16, 2019, sheriff’s deputies and Green paramedics responded to an overdose. A 36-year-old Green man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Carfentanil is 10,000 times more potent than morphine. It is nearly impossible to detect carfentanil simply by looking at it because it’s often mixed in with other drugs or disguised as prescription tablets.

Investigators from the sheriff’s office and Summit County Drug Unit learned the man had been buying heroin from Wilson. On the day he died, the man bought what he believed was heroin from Wilson, Holland said. Investigators determined the drug was actually carfentanil.

Prosecutors say that on several occasions in May 2019, Wilson provided a confidential source with the Summit County Drug Unit a similar substance containing a carfentanil. On May 23, 2019, law enforcement officers searched Wilson’s residence and obtained carfentanil, heroin and multiple items used in the preparation of drug distribution, including a digital scale, plastic baggies, cutting agents, a blender with powder residue, and a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol.

Authorities did not release the identity of the victim.
