Claimants of Universal Credit in the United Kingdom receive some financial aid from the UK government, but just when does this money typically come through? In this article, we will explain the process and when you should typically see the money arrive in your bank account.
Some people have complained about the complex nature of Universal Credit, with it having replaced six existing benefits, but the payments are relatively simple if you know what is going on.
When is Universal Credit paid?
Once a month, a single payment will be sent out by Universal Credit after having been assessed and paid in arrears. Depending on when you submit your first claim, that will determine when your payment is calculated.
The first Universal Credit payment is made a week after the end of the first one-month assessment period, which means that when you first apply for the benefit you will have a five-week wait.
From that point on, payments will be made on the same date every month, although this changes if it falls on a bank holiday or a weekend.
"If a payment date is on a bank holiday or weekend, customers will be paid on the last working day before the bank holiday or weekend," said the Department for Work and Pensions.
Yet, it is worth noting that even if there is a change of date due to a bank holiday or it being the weekend, the amount of money you will get will not change.
Should you find that your payments typically come through on the 29th, 30th or 31st of the month and we are in a month with 28 days, you will be paid on the 28th - the last day of the month.
What time you get paid by Universal Credit?
The Universal Credit payments are usually sent to a bank, building society or credit union account, and it is necessary for this to be a current account rather than a savings account.
After the Universal Credit payment is sent out by the UK government, the money usually becomes available at some point after midnight on the day it is due, but this depends on your bank.
As reported by ToughNickel, these are the typical times that banks process the funds:
- Clydesdale, Yorkshire - 11.30pm the night before to 12.30am
- Lloyds - midnight to 1am
- Bank of Scotland - midnight to 1.30am
- Metro Bank - midnight to 2am
- Barclays, Co-op- 1am to 2am
- Natwest, RBS, Ulster Bank, Nationwide - 2am to 3am
- Halifax - 3am to 4am
- HSBC, Santander - 6am to 9am
