Mary J. Blige has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the booker of the 2022 Miami Funk Fest, claiming they failed to fork over all the money she’s owed for her performance.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Florida (and highlighted first in Seamus Hughes’ Court Watch newsletter), accuses RM Talent Agency of “failing to pay the full amount of the Performance Fee” agreed upon for the 2022 concert. Blige is seeking damages, pre-and -post-judgment interest, as well as attorney fees and any other relief the court “deems just and proper.”
A rep for RM Talent Agency did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s request for comment, nor did Blige’s lawyer.
According to the lawsuit, Blige and RM Talent Agency entered into a contract for the show on Sept. 5, 2022, settling on a performance fee of $1.1 million. Blige said she received the first chunk of her payment — $250,000 — on Sept. 20, not long after the contract was signed, while a second payment of $200,000 was received on Nov. 9.
Blige performed at Miami Funk Fest on Dec. 30, 2022; a few weeks later, on Jan. 18, she received another payment of $200,000. Since then, however, the R&B legend alleges she hasn’t received any additional payments and is still owed a balance of $450,000.
Last year, Blige released her 14th studio album — and first in five years — Good Morning Gorgeous. The singer spent much of the year touring in support of the record and later earned six Grammy nominations for the effort, including nods for Album of the Year and Best R&B Album. This year, Bige has played a handful of concerts and is set to appear at Hot 97’s special hip-hop 50th anniversary show on Sept. 15 at Madison Square Garden.
Blige was also recently cast in the upcoming drama Rob Peace. The film, written and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, is based on Jeff Hobbs’ biography of Peace, a young man who had a tumultuous childhood in Newark, New Jersey, before attending Yale on a scholarship and earning a degree in biophysics and biochemistry. He then led a double life as a researcher and teacher while selling marijuana on the side and was ultimately killed in 2011, at the age of 30, in a drug-related shooting. Blige is set to play Peace’s mother, while Ejiofor, along with directing, will portray his father.
