Have yet to receive a stimulus payment? There’s a new way to trace the funds. - silive.com

STATEN ISLND, N.Y. -- If the IRS said it sent out your stimulus check -- but you have yet to receive it, there’s some new guidance to help track your payment.

The stimulus checks were funded through a $2 trillion package from the federal government that includes $250 billion for direct payment to Americans, in addition to money for small businesses, unemployment insurance, health-care costs and more.

Initially the IRS said to use Get My Payment app, which was supposed to make it easier for you to set up and track the status of your payment.

Many New York residents said the Get My Payment app showed a payment was sent via direct deposit or check, but the payment was never received.

For this reason, the IRS is now allowing you to initiate a trace on the missing payment.

HOW TO LAUNCH A TRACE

To launch a trace, submit IRS Form 3911 or call the agency at (800) 919-9835.

IRS said a trace can be launched if you have been issued Notice 1444, which is a letter signed by President Donald Trump notifying you of a stimulus payment sent. A trace can also be started if the Get My Payment app issued a payment date for you.

“Please be advised that you may experience long wait times or recorded assistance due to limited staffing,” the IRS said. “If you submit the form and you are Married Filing Joint, both spouses must sign the form.”

WHEN TO START A TRACE

If the Get My Payment app said you should get the check via direct deposit, don’t launch the trace unless it’s been more than five days since your payment was sent, the IRS said. It’s also wise to check with your bank to confirm it didn’t receive the direct deposit, said a report in NJ.com, SILive’s sister site.

If the Get My Payment app said a paper check was mailed, allow at least four weeks for it to arrive before starting a trace, the report says.

Also, be aware some people were mailed a debit card instead of a check.

HOW MUCH WILL YOU GET?

Non-married individuals who filed a tax return with an adjusted gross income of up to $75,000 in 2018 will be eligible for a check of $1,200.

Payments are reduced for singles earning up to $99,000 -- and they drop $5 for every $100 in income above $75,000, according to the IRS.

Individuals who earned more than $99,000 will not receive a check.
