Walmart will stop selling “All Lives Matter” merchandise “indefinitely” on its website — after facing intense backlash over the items, according to a new report.
“We fundamentally believe all lives do matter and every individual deserves respect,” Walmart said in a statement, USA Today reported. “However, as we listened, we came to understand that the way some, but not all, people are using the phrase ‘All Lives Matter’ in the current environment intentionally minimized the focus on the painful reality of racial inequity.”
The move comes a week after Walmart said the Mississippi flag, which includes a Confederate emblem, would no longer be on display in its stores in that state. Mississippi lawmakers have since voted to remove the symbol.
Walmart will continue to allow other “Lives Matter” merchandise to be sold in its stores, but items will be scrutinized to ensure they comply with its rules and conditions, according to the report.
