SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The first thing that draws attention to the new women’s clothing store that has opened on Mayfield Road is its name. The sign on the front of 4078 Mayfield Road reads “Envious Dolls Boutique.”
First-time business owner and South Euclid resident Juanita Tate was asked where she came up with such a name for her shop. She laughed before answering, “Actually, my daughter’s middle name is ‘Envy,' so I just put it together with ‘Dolls.' I was going through a lot of problems when my daughter was born. There was a lot of stuff going on, so I named her Envy.”
Equipped with a unique name, Tate has gone about filling her shop with styles that range from “unique and different” -- matching the self-description of her own clothing style -- to business attire.
“I have different kinds of styles and flavors,” Tate said of her store’s offerings. “It depends on what you’re looking for. I have playful-fun, serious, conservative, dinner wear, party wear. I’ve got different things and different flavors.”
When asked why she got into the business, Tate said, “The reason I wanted to get in the clothing business is I like dressing, myself. Everybody always asks me where I get my clothes from, so I decided to go into selling women‘s clothing.
“I have great prices. Prices start at about $10 and go up to $80. I don’t go over $80 when I’m pricing my clothes. It depends on the quality of the materials.”
In addition to women’s clothing, Envious Dolls Boutique sells headbands, earrings, jewelry and a small selection of shoes. Tate said she has just begun to sell shoes and expects that the selection will soon begin to grow. She also said she will soon be carrying necklaces and anklets.
Tate picked a tough time to open her business -- March 7. It was only about 10 days later that Ohio’s businesses were ordered closed due to the coronavirus.
“That’s right, it was a very, very bad time to open,” she said. After that brief opening, Tate and other Ohio retail store owners were able to re-open their businesses May 12.
The good news is that shoppers are now checking out Tate’s store. “The business has been booming,” she said. “No one’s been afraid to shop. It’s been great.”
It is now mandatory in Cuyahoga County to wear a mask when inside public places, and Tate said she has a few masks to give to customers who find themselves without face coverings.
Envious Dolls Boutique is open from 1-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. It is open by appointment only on Sundays by calling 216- 622-5886. The business is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
According to Economic Development Director Michael Love, the Envious Dolls Boutique is located in a nearly 1,500-square-foot storefront formerly occupied by The Movie Exchange. The storefront, he said, has been vacant for about the last year.
“just come in,” Tate said to those in need of women’s clothes. “We’re a vibrant store and we welcome our customers.”
