SARATOGA SPRINGS — The New York Racing Association will begin selling gift cards starting at $50 that can be used to bet on horses through the association's app, a move that will put NYRA in greater competition with Off-Track Betting and other betting platforms as the Saratoga racing season starts Thursday.
The cards will be sold a Stewart's Shops around the region and will give NYRA an injection of revenue that would otherwise be lost with the decision to ban fans from the race course because of concerns about the spread of coronavirus.
NYRA already offers a betting app but the gift cards will make it easier to place a bet on its system.
Thousands of people usually flood the race course during the summer season, which this year starts Thursday, placing millions of dollars in bets at windows and kiosks around the track.
But without fans, NYRA faces a speed lost in an important revenue stream.
"We had to pivot," said NYRA bets President Tony Allevato, explaining the move toward gift cards.
Stewart's President Gary Dake said it was unlikely the gift cards would generate a profit for the Saratoga-based convenience store chain but they wanted to support what is essentially a hometown business at the race course.
"It's very simple to use. It is very easy technology," Dake said.
