BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Hundreds of Salmonella Newport cases across several states have been linked to a supplier based in Bakersfield, according to an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention have identified Thomson International, Inc. of Bakersfield as a likely source of potentially contaminated red onions.
Although the investigation has determined that red onions are the likely source of this outbreak, Thomson International, Inc. has notified the FDA that it will be recalling all varieties of onions that could have come in contact with potentially contaminated red onions, due to the risk of cross-contamination. This recall would include red, white, yellow, and sweet onions from Thomson International, Inc.
"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections that may be linked to these onions, so Thomson International is recalling the onions out of an abundance of caution," Thomas International said in a statement.
"As of now no specific source of contamination or contaminated shipment has been identified, and FDA is also investigating other potential sources of contamination and has not yet reached a final conclusion."
According to the FDA, 396 Salmonella Newport infections have been reported nationwide with 59 hospitalizations. California has the highest infection case with 49 cases.
The FDA is recommending consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, sell, or serve red, white, yellow, or sweet onions from Thomson International, Inc. or products containing such onions.
