A Florida man behind a fake church allegedly selling a deadly bleach coronavirus “miracle cure” has been arrested in Colombia.
Mark Grenon, 62, and his son, Joseph, 32, face extradition to the US after they were detained by Colombian authorities, the country’s top prosecutor announced Tuesday evening on Twitter.
Their arrests come a month after the pair were charged by federal authorities in Florida for allegedly peddling the dangerous product under the name “Miracle Mineral Solution,” or MMS.
The family sold the toxic concoction out of Florida through an entity called the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing, which prosecutors said was a phony religious entity created in an attempt to avoid government regulation.
The Grenons allegedly instructed their buyers to drink the solution orally, which the Food and Drug Administration has warned could prove fatal.
The family’s bleach cocktail is believed to have resulted in the deaths of seven Americans, The Guardian reported.
The Grenons are accused of pushing the product even before the coronavirus pandemic as a cure for other ailments that require expensive treatments, like cancer, Alzheimer’s, autism, multiple sclerosis, and HIV/AIDS. Prosecutors believe they have sold tens of thousands of bottles of MMS nationwide.
A Miami federal judge in April ordered Genesis II Church of Health and Healing to stop selling MMS, but the Grenon’s ignored the decision, prosecutors allege.
“We will NOT be participating in any of your UNCONSTITUTIONAL Orders, Summons, etc,” read one email from Mark Grenon to US District Judge Kathleen Williams. “Again and again I have written you all that . . . you have NO authority over our Church.”
Mark Grenon and his three sons — Jonathan Grenon, 34, Jordan Grenon, 26, and Joseph Grenon, 32 — have been charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to violate the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and criminal contempt.
