If you didn’t get your stimulus payment, here’s what you need to do - lehighvalleylive.com

Millions of Americans are still waiting to receive their stimulus payment from the coronavirus relief bill that was passed back in the spring.

The majority of people who are still waiting are those who are not required to file tax returns and who do not receive federal benefits such as Social Security retirement, disability (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or survivor benefits, veteran’s benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits.

If you don’t fall into those categories, you have until October 15 to use the IRS Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool.

The IRS said it set the deadline so the agency has enough time to process payments before the end of the year.

“The IRS won’t have the information necessary to issue you a payment unless you provide some basic information about yourself, your spouse, and any qualifying child under age 17,” the IRS said. “Entering your bank account information will allow the IRS to deposit your payment directly into your account. Otherwise, your payment will be mailed to you.”

It offered a few specifics about who should and shouldn’t use the tool.

Don’t use the tool if you are claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return or if you don’t have a valid Social Security number, the IRS said, because you’re not eligible for a benefit. (For more on who is eligible, check out our stimulus calculator.)

You should use the tool if you receive federal benefits and got a payment, but your spouse does not receive federal benefits and did not receive a payment. You can also use the tool if you did not receive the extra $500 benefit for qualifying children who are 16 and under.

To use the tool, you’ll need to enter:

  • Your full name, current mailing address and an email address;
  • Your date of birth and Social Security number;
  • Your bank account number, type and routing number, if you have one;
  • Your Identity Protection Personal Identification Number — something that’s used to prevent someone from filing a fraudulent tax return using your Social Security number — if you have one;
  • Your driver’s license or state-issued ID, if you have one;
  • For each child age 16 and under, you need their name, Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number and their relationship to you or your spouse.

SNAIL MAIL?

You also have the option to use the tool to enter your information and instead of submitting it, you can print and mail the document, but that will take longer for the IRS to process.

“It is important that you submit the information only once (either on-line or by mailing in the printed form). Do not submit the information twice,” the IRS said.

If you do mail it in, make sure that the words “EIP 2020” are at the top of the printed document. Also, be sure to check “Child tax credit” for each qualifying child you claim in the section about dependents.

Then mail the document to the address where you would file your individual tax return. You can look up the address here.

If for some reason you don’t want to enter your information into the tool at all, you need to send either your Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, or Form 1040-SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors.

You can find the forms and instructions on the IRS website.
