Text messages, calls claim AT&T payment failed | Scam of the Week - Chico Enterprise-Record

At least two local residents recently received calls and/or text messages from a source suggesting that an AT&T bill payment was unsuccessful.

Both Stephen Tchudi and Kit Robinson emailed this newspaper within minutes of each other on Aug. 4 to report the scams that involved the same method and information.

Tchudi said a text message was sent from someone claiming to be from AT&T, indicating a payment was unsuccessful and instructed Tchudi to call 909-768-8411. Tchudi did not respond.

Also on Aug. 4, Kit Robinson said a text message indicated an AT&T payment did not go through, and said to call the same number, 909-768-8411. Four days later, Robinson then received a second notice from someone claiming to represent AT&T, this time on Robinson’s landline.

Robinson said the person claimed to be from Texas, however, no other information was given. Robinson then called AT&T and was advised that the previous contacts were indeed scams.

Wisely, both Tchudi and Robinson did not respond to the text messages and calls from the fake numbers. If you have an AT&T account and receive a message in this format, it is likely a scam. Before responding, it is always worth checking your account first to see if there actually was an issue with a bill payment not going through.
