What happens to your second stimulus payment if you threw away your debit card? - NJ.com

Congress continues to negotiate the newest coronavirus relief bill, so we don’t yet know how it will all shake out.

One thing Republicans and Democrats seem to agree on is that Americans should receive another direct stimulus payment.

Both sides are looking at $1,200 payments per person, but their plans differ in how they will treat payments for dependents.

You can use our stimulus calculator to see how much of a benefit you might get under each plan.

But how will the payments come to you?

We expect the payment delivery will be similar to how you received your first payment. Most people received it by direct deposit or paper check.

But some four million Americans received a debit card loaded with the stimulus payment.

The cards caused a lot of confusion because many recipients were expecting a paper check based on what they were told from the IRS’ Get My Payment tool.

Some people thought the cards were scams or junk mail, and they threw them away.

They were able to get a replacement card by contacting Money Network — the company handling the cards for the government — at (800) 240-8100.

Many readers are concerned, saying once they got their money off the card, they tossed it. So now that a second stimulus payment is expected, what happens if you didn’t hold onto the card?

You can still get a new one — but it might cost you.

The IRS said people who have lost or destroyed their card can get a free replacement from Money Network.

But it’s only free for your first replacement.

So if you threw out the card when you first received it, you were able to get a replacement for free.

But if you didn’t save the card after you took your stimulus money off the card and you order a new one, as of right now, it will cost $7.50 to replace.

It’s always possible that the IRS revises its agreement with the card company, but as of now, the agency hasn’t said that’s on the table.

The fee would be subtracted from that balance on your card.

Some people may want to replace their cards now to hope they get a faster stimulus payment, but we don’t yet know for sure that the second payment will be put on the card. We’ll be on the lookout for new guidance from the IRS once the relief package is passed.
