How to avoid stimulus payment scams - WBNG-TV

(WBNG) -- The Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York is warning people of scams surrounding stimulus payments.

As the second round of payments make their way to Americans, so are scams.

The BBB urges people to avoid giving personal and financial information to anyone on the phone. They say if people are called and told the Internal Revenue Service needs information, then it is likely a scam.

They say the IRS has information for people receiving stimulus payments. They tell people if it is not a scammer and actually the IRS, they won't ask for more than a verification.

The IRS also has a new website that allows Americans to check the status of their stimulus payment. You can find more information on the website here.

Melanie McGovern is the communications director for the BBB and says the new website can create new opportunities for scammers. "They'll get a domain that looks like it's directing you to a legitimate website or it's a letter off from the legitimate website, make sure you're on the legitimate website before you put any kind of information on there."
