Second stimulus check update: Watch your mail for a debit card with your payment, IRS says - NJ.com

The IRS says it is sending approximately 8 million prepaid debit cards loaded with the second stimulus payment this week.

The cards, known as Economic Impact Payment (EIP) cards, could go to anyone who didn’t already receive a direct deposit payment, the agency said.

The announcement comes after many people threw out cards they received for the first stimulus payment because they thought they were junk mail or scams.

The IRS said the cards were sent to speed up the delivery of second stimulus payments for millions of Americans.

“IRS and Treasury urge eligible people who don’t receive a direct deposit to watch their mail carefully during this period,” the IRS said.

Not everyone who received a card for the first payment will receive a card for the second. They could receive a check instead. And some who received a check the first time may receive a card this time, the agency said.

The cards are being sent in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal, the IRS said. The card has the Visa name on the front and the issuing bank name, MetaBank, on the back of the card.

The federal government is sending 8 million second stimulus payments by debit card. Here's what the card and envelope look like.

Each mailing will include instructions on how to securely activate and use the cards, the IRS said.

Card recipients can make purchases online or in stores anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, the agency said. They can also be used to get cash from domestic in-network ATMs or to transfer funds to a personal bank account.

You can also get a replacement card if needed without incurring any fees.

“They can also check their card balance online, through a mobile app or by phone without incurring fees,” the IRS said. “The EIP Card provides consumer protections including certain protections against fraud, loss and other errors.”

If you haven’t received your second stimulus payment yet, you can track it on the IRS’ Get My Payment tool.

It will allow you to confirm whether or not the agency has sent your second stimulus payment. It will also confirm whether it sent your first stimulus payment, and whether the payments were sent via direct deposit or through the mail.

The IRS said the data is updated once per day in the overnight hours.

By law, the IRS has to send out all payments by Jan. 15. If it doesn’t have your information, you can still get your payment by claiming a credit called the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return.

Then you would get the payment in the form of a tax refund.
