The expansion of the child tax credit meant millions of American families began receiving payments last month. There’s a small – but possibly important – change in the payments for this month.
The expanded child tax credit provides $3,600 for each qualifying child under age 6 and $3,000 for each qualifying child over age 6 but under age 18. Half of the credits – up to $1,800 or up to $1,500, depending on the total – will be paid in six monthly installments of $300 or $250 dollars per child. The remainder can be claimed when filing 2021 tax returns.
July’s payments came on the 15th of the month as will the payments for September, October, November and December. August’s payment, however, will be made on Friday, Aug. 13, a change due to the fact the 15th of the month falls on a Sunday.
How will payments be made?
If the IRS has your banking information, your child tax credit will be sent via direct deposit. People without banking information on file with the IRS will receive their payments via a paper check.
Payments are subject to income limitations for recipients. The advance payments will be reduced if adjusted gross income exceeds $150,000 for married couples filing jointly; $112,500 for those filing as head of household; and $75,000 for single filers or married couples filing separate returns.

The IRS has a separate site, the Child Tax Credit Update Portal, that allows people to change their number of dependents, direct deposit information or to cancel payments, you can go here.
