The latest monthly child tax credit payment will be delivered on Aug. 13.
This is the second of six monthly installment payments which are part of the American Rescue Plan. The law increased the 2021 child tax credit from a maximum of $2,000 to up to $3,600, and allows families to receive 50% of their child tax credit between July 15 and Dec. 15.
Families with qualifying children can expect to receive up to $300 a month per child under the age of 6 and $250 per child ages 6 to 17.
The IRS disbursed the first monthly child tax credit payment to American families on July 15 and payments expire at the end of the year. While President Biden and some Democratic lawmakers have expressed interest in continuing the payments in 2022, there are no plans to continue the increased amount or the payment schedule beyond 2021.
If you qualify for the monthly child tax credit payments, here is what you need to know about the next round.
Will I Receive My Child Tax Credit Payment on Aug. 13?
If you are eligible for the monthly child tax credit payments, you will receive the second installment on Aug. 13. Payments will continue throughout the year, paid as follows:
Monthly Child Tax Credit Payment Schedule
Monthly Child Tax Credit Payment | Payment Dates |
Payment #1 | July 15 |
Payment #2 | Aug. 13 |
Payment #3 | Sept. 15 |
Payment #4 | Oct. 15 |
Payment #5 | Nov. 15 |
Payment #6 | Dec. 15 |
You can check your monthly payment status by using the IRS Child Tax Credit Update Portal. The portal provides you with information about your payment, including whether it is pending or has already been processed.
If your payment is pending, it means that the IRS is still reviewing your account to determine your eligibility. During this time, the IRS will not pay the monthly amount until it determines you are eligible. You can continue to check back for updates using the portal. If the IRS does not process your payment in 2021, you can claim the child tax credit when filing your tax return in 2022.
The IRS will pay your monthly child tax credit payment by paper check or direct deposit if it has your banking information on file. The IRS will use banking information from your 2020 or 2019 tax return (whichever is filed later), the non-filer tool, or from a federal agency that provides you with benefits, such as the Social Security Administration or Department of Veterans Affairs.
What Steps Can I Take If I Am Eligible But Did Not Receive My Payment?
First, if you are required to file a tax return, you should submit either your 2019 or 2020 tax return to the IRS for processing. Once the IRS receives your tax information, it will process your monthly child tax credit payments. If you are typically not required to file and don’t plan to file a tax return, you should register for your payments using the non-filer tool.
You may also need to update your tax information in the Child Tax Credit Update Portal if your tax situation changed in 2021. For example, if you adopted or gave birth to a child, you can now claim a qualifying child from a prior year, or update income or filing status that has changed.
Next, you want to verify your banking information in the portal. You should ensure that the information the IRS shows online is correct.
Lastly, if the IRS sent your child tax credit payment, but you have yet to receive it, you may want to request a payment trace with the IRS.
What Should I Do If the Amount Is Incorrect?
If you believe the amount of your monthly child tax credit payment is incorrect, you should review Letter 6417 sent to you by the IRS. These letters were mailed before the first round of monthly child tax credit payments, informing you of your estimated payment based on your tax information the IRS has on file.
If you cannot find that notice, you can also use our Monthly Child Tax Credit Calculator to determine the amount of your monthly child tax credit payment. Our calculator allows you to enter your filing status, estimated adjusted gross income for 2021, the age and number of qualifying dependents to determine your payment.
If you received the monthly child tax credit payment for a child that no longer meets the requirements for a qualifying child, you might want to use the portal to unenroll from the payments. If you do not take this action, you may need to repay the IRS the amount of the advance child tax credit payments you received when you file your tax return next year.
