The Internal Revenue Service said a “technical issue” is to blame for some people not receiving the September installment of the child tax credit.
Some 35 million child tax credits worth $15 billion were distributed last week but roughly 2% of eligible recipients failed to receive their payment. The unidentified technical issue that caused the delay has now been resolved and the money is on its way, the IRS said. People who didn’t receive their payment should be getting it shortly via direct deposit or in the coming days if they receive their checks by mail.
The impacted group primarily included taxpayers who recently made an update on their bank account or address on the IRS child tax credit update portal and payments made to married filing jointly taxpayers where only one spouse made a bank or address change.
“We know people depend on receiving these payments on time and we apologize for the delay,” the IRS said.
The expanded child tax credit pays up to $300 per child ages 5 and younger and up to $300 for children ages 6-17. Payments began in July and will continue through December with the remaining $1,500 or $1,800 eligible for a claim when filing 2021 taxes.
Checks are typically distributed on the 15th of the month.
Received a different amount than expected?
The IRS said there are “multiple reasons” why people may be seeing a different amount than expected. One of those is if one spouse changed an address or bank account and the other person didn’t, meaning the other spouse’s half could be going to an old address or bank account. In these instances, the full payment will still be distributed, according to the tax agency.
Monthly payment amounts can also change depending on recently processed tax returns.
Some families, however, will see higher payments this month. Families who did not get a July or August payment and are receiving their first monthly installment in September will receive their total advance payment of the year but it will be spread out over four months instead of six, making each payment larger. For these families, each payment is up to $450 per month for each child under age 6 and up to $375 per month for each child ages 6 through 17.
