If you live in California, you can increase your food budget by taking advantage of the CalFresh program, formerly known as Food Stamps and officially recognized as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The scheme offers monthly electronic benefits that may be used at various markets and grocery stores to purchase foods such as bread, cereal, fruits, vegetables, meat and fish.
The Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture is in charge of running the program on a federal level. Meanwhile, the CalFresh Program in California is overseen by the County Welfare Departments and the California Department of Social Services.
When will you get the last bonus payment?
Following the COVID-19 outbreak, California have offered emergency allotments to eligible households which received a minimum payment of 95 dollars per month.
However, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, one which was signed into law by United States President Joe Biden back in December, is set to put an end to the CalFresh Emergency Allotments.
The US Department of Agriculture announced through a press release that the aforementioned law is set to end emergency allotments after issuing the February 2023 benefits.
Why are the CalFresh Emergency Allotments ending?
"The last benefit month that may include EA is February 2023," reads the official US Department of Agriculture website.
"This memorandum supersedes the guidance issued by FNS on April 1, 2021 and Dec. 14, 2021, which allowed state agencies to issue EA for one phase-out month after the expiration of the national Public Health Emergency or state-level emergency declaration.
"Under the new authority, state agencies cannot issue EA for a phase-out month after benefit month February 2023. In other words, states are not allowed to issue EA for benefit month March 2023, or later, under any circumstance."
"States who issue EA the month after the benefit month (e.g., issue February 2023 EA in March 2023) may continue this practice. In addition, when a state retroactively updates a household's case and is providing benefits for February 2023 or prior, they should adjust the SNAP emergency allotment along with the normal monthly allotment, as appropriate."
