SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Once COVID-19 swept across the country, it immediately began affecting fishermen in the Santa Barbara Harbor.
With restaurants experiencing less customers, the demand for local seafood dropped significantly.
In order to survive this crisis, longtime local fisherman Stace Cheverez changed his business model.
“So to adapt, I decided to just start selling directly to the public,” Cheverez said.
In just a few weeks, Cheverez Seafoods has quickly become popular with the public.
During the Fisherman’s Market on Saturday morning, it’s become quite common for his direct seafood service to sellout.
“The number one thing is the public support right now has been key,” Cheverez said.
This uptick in demand for fresh seafood has caught the attention of a few other fishermen, who have combined forces with Cheverez.
“I had other friends, fishermen in the harbor that couldn’t sell their product,” Cheverez said. “I became basically the consignment shop of all of our product.”
Cheverez Seafoods sells products directly off their boat — Florentina Marie — in the Santa Barbara Harbor every week from Wednesday through Saturday. They’re also open for business at the Fisherman’s Market each Saturday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
