Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has announced that face masks will now be required in seven counties where the coronavirus continues to spread rapidly.
The order goes into effect on Wednesday at 6 p.m. In those counties, people will be required to wear masks in public spaces and outdoors when social distancing is not possible. The seven counties are Hamilton, Butler, Montgomery, Cuyahoga, Huron, Franklin and Trumbull.
Masks are being given extra importance as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the United States.
Kroger began passing out free masks to shoppers in all of its Cincinnati stores on July 2.
Masks will be distributed for free by Metro on Government Square on July 9 from noon to 2 p.m. There is a two-per-person limit.
Masks are required in Cincinnati beginning July 9.

Where do I have to wear a mask?
- Any indoor location that is not a residence
- Outdoors when you cannot consistently maintain a distance of six feet or more from individuals who are not members of your household.
- Waiting for, riding, driving or operating public transportation, a taxi, a private car service or ride-sharing vehicles.
What will happen if you're not wearing a mask?
"We're not looking to see a lot of people arrested. That's not the idea at all," DeWine said. "The idea is this is the norm. This is what is needed for Ohioans to stay safe."
The order will be enforced by local health departments, DeWine said. The current penalty for violating an Ohio health order is a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to 90-day jail term or a fine not more than $750.
State lawmakers passed Senate Bill 55 to require a warning on the first violation and a fine up to $150 on subsequent violations, but DeWine said he would veto that language.
Cincinnati City Council voted to fine violators $25.
