The U.S. Senate is back in session this week, and the legislative body’s top leader has confirmed good news for millions of Americans.
According to The Hill, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is a Republican from Kentucky, said Tuesday that his chamber will start discussing another coronavirus economic relief package, and added that it will include a second stimulus payment for eligible citizens.
“Speaking of building on what worked in the CARES Act, we want another round of direct payments, direct payments to help American families keep driving our national comeback,” McConnell said, according to The Hill.
It’s not yet clear what exactly the Republican-controlled Senate will vote to approve, however. There have been mixed signals regarding whether or not it will immediately take up the HEROES Act, a bill passed by Democrats in the U.S. House back in May, or if they will come up with their own Act to send back to the House for review.
Under HEROES, anyone making less than $70,000 as a single filer or $140,000 as a joint filer would receive $1,200, the same amount as the act’s predecessor, the CARES Act. Payments would be reduced on a sliding adjustable gross income scale from there, with the highest earners eventually being completely phased out. A key change, however, is that those with a taxpayer identification number would be eligible for a stimulus check, payment, or prepaid debit card under HEROES; CARES only applied to those with a social security number Additionally, three dependents could be claimed for up to $1,200 each.
“Republicans embracing the next round of checks is a stark turnaround from recent months, where several GOP senators said they were either opposed or not convinced of the need for more checks,” The Hill writes.
“But the movement toward a second round of checks comes as the economy remains rocky as the country’s coronavirus cases continue to climb. Unemployment also remains stuck in the double digits.”
If both chambers can agree on legislation to send President Donald Trump for approval, checks could go out by mid-to-late August.
