MIDDLETOWN — The Middlesex Community College Foundation presented its ninth annual Red Moon fundraiser, streamed live for the first time Oct. 3.
The virtual event kicked off its fall giving season, bringing together community members, alumni, faculty and staff to support scholarships for students while enjoying musical entertainment and a chance at winning prizes, according to a press release.
Maxwell Gottfried, a 2019 graduate of the ophthalmic design and dispensing program, received a scholarship through the foundation after he thought he exhausted all of his resources to fund his college education, the release said.
“The news of that scholarship brought tears to my mother’s eyes, as we knew how important it was for my future,” Gottfried said in a prepared statement. “Through that scholarship and the kindness of the staff at the school, I was able to climb out of financial trouble, finish my degree and obtain my optician license.
“When someone I help who has no idea where else to turn thanks me, they thank the school and the donors that helped me to get where I am,” said Gottfried, who now manages one of highest volume optical locations in his area.
Laura Krueger, foundation chairwoman and Middlesex alumna, welcomed the audience by reigning in a “red moon” to start the broadcast. CEO Steven Minkler highlighted the college’s partnerships, including Stop & Shop’s $5,000 worth of gift cards they donated to support students with food insecurity, according to the college.
Rick Eriksen and Kimberly Hogan, both staff at the college, hosted the lively broadcast, which was professionally produced at MxCC’s Center for New Media broadcast facilities. The five-piece band, Six Feet Apart, performed between segments, the college said.
Although the live event has ended, the foundation is still actively accepting donations to reach its fall goal of $50,000.
“We are continuing to raise funds in support of our students through the sale of raffle tickets,” Hogan said. Tickets are $50 each, and top prizes include an outdoor pizza oven, 40-inch monitor with Apple TV, set of car tires with alignment, a $500 gift card to the Downtown Middletown Business District and more.

Gottfried also issued a friendly challenge for donors to match or exceed his $150 donation to the MxCC Foundation. “My success would have simply not occurred without the opportunity afforded to me by this school and those who donated.”
