Second stimulus check: Americans could receive more money in new round of payments, whenever that comes, repo - PennLive

For a moment there it looked like President Donald Trump was pulling a second stimulus payment off the table right when Americans needed it most.

But Trump reversed course, and spent most of the week pushing for a second deal to get done. And so, the saga continues. Will Americans get the money that both Republicans and Democrats agree they sorely need? How much will it be? And if it does come, will it make it to bank accounts before the end of the year?

Well, cnet.com reported some good news Friday and that is a second stimulus check could bring a bigger payment than March’s first round of aid which paid most Americans $1,200.

That report, however, was accompanied by some bad news and that was that we just can’t be sure a deal will get done in time for that money to come in 2020.

That appeared a certainty just months after March’s first round of payments, but talks hit a snag in August with Republicans and Democrats, generally, being about $1 trillion apart in their view of how much money should go out.

Democrats' plans would cost around $2.2 trillion while Republicans' plans call for a little more than $1.8 trillion. While that seems like a wide gap to close, the sides have talking and trying to come to an agreement.

“We’re at the table,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday, according to cnet. “We want to continue the conversation. We’ve made some progress. We’re exchanging language. So, we’ll see how we connect.”

Trump, while being treated for COVID-19, made an abrupt decision to end talks, but he reversed course and was pushing for a larger package, too, as the weekend approached.

Cnet said that a new deal could bring more money to individual Americans “through a new eligibility rule that could change who qualifies as a dependent.” But, the report said, as has been common in most scenarios regarding a second stimulus payment, it’s like that $1,200 could, again, be the amount individuals receive.

That number — $1,200 —has been a constant in the last stimulus bill and in the past two stimulus proposals, the site reported. And, much like last time, if an agreement can be reached most Americans would receive their payment, the report said, via direct deposit.

Trump tweeted Friday that “negations are moving along,” and added “Go Big!”

So, a week that started with the idea that a stimulus package may be out the window, ends with some renewed hope. And, it ends with, likely, similar numbers on the table for Americans when it comes to payments.

But, unfortunately, it also ends without a deal, and time is running out to reach an agreement in time for Americans to receive money before year’s end.
