KAUKAUNA, Wis. — A Fox Valley group is giving back to local police by selling yard signs. A few Facebook posts from the Thin Blue Line Signs group got people down to the Kaukauna Police Department Thursday evening to pick them up.
David Norgren wasn’t expecting to stop in but says the money goes towards a good cause.
“So my wife texted me on the way home and said, hey stop at the Kaukauna Police Department and pick up a couple signs. So I said, okay no problem,” said Norgren.
Kauakauna’s Mayor Tony Penterman also swung by and grabbed a couple signs on his way home from work.
“I’ll put one right in my front yard and then I’ll give one either to my sister or ask one of my friends if they want one,” said Penterman.
Kaukauna Police Chief Jamie Graff was a customer before he offered his station up as a drop off point.
“My wife found their Facebook page and ordered one. We went over the the Grand Chute Police Department to pick it up and we met Matt and his group,” said Graff.
Matt Harper, along with Jenn Bronk, take online orders and sell the signs at drop off points throughout the area. They picked a design hoping to avoid controversy during these tumultuous times and keep the focus on the positive. The sign reads simply: We Stand Behind This Line.
“Every police officer I know, never wants to be associated with a police officer that’s not doing the right thing. Officers are in the same boat as the citizens. They want the bad one’s out and they want to help with that. They don’t want to be lumped in together with the ones that are doing things they shouldn’t be doing,” said Harper who’s a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Demand has been high. Police departments and Facebook police scanner pages have helped with promotion. Signs sell for $10 and all profits will go to help Fox Valley area departments fill equipment needs.
“Appleton Police Department has needs for some trauma bags. We’re going to provide twenty of their intensive use squads with trauma bags. Those are bags that if there’s a mass casualty or a shooting or something that can really provide a tourniquet or something that can slow the bleeding, it might save somebody’s life,” said Harper.
The Kauakauna department is currently assessing their needs. In the meantime, Chief Graff says the signs alone are a welcome sight for officers.
“I thought it was a great idea and it’s a great way for the public to show support local law enforcement and officers love seeing that support,” said Graff.
