ShopRite workers will receive extra wages in the form of retroactive hazard pay because of the inherent dangers in manning grocery store cash registers and stocking shelves during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The newly announced agreement — brokered between Shop-Rite and the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, the largest private-sector union in the country — will apply to nearly 50,000 employees in the tri-state area.
“Grocery workers have been on the frontlines since this pandemic began and continue to put themselves in harm’s way to help families put food on this Thanksgiving,” UFCW International President Marc Perrone said in a statement Wednesday. “This new UFCW agreement is a powerful victory for ShopRite grocery workers across New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut.”
Employees who worked between July 26 and Aug. 22 and remain employed as of Dec. 5 will receive an extra $1 per hour in a lump sum payment. The deal also leaves open the possibility of future hazard payments in the case of another COVID-19 outbreak, UFCW said.
The hazard pay comes in addition to Temporary Emergency Premium pay provided to workers throughout the pandemic, according to Wakefern Food Corporation, ShopRite’s parent company. For workers who have already received bonuses or additional wages, those payments will offset the hazard pay.
“We are thankful for all our associates do each day to keep our family-owned and operated stores running smoothly and safely,” Wakefern said in a statement.
The union reports that 109 grocery workers have died and more than 48,000 have been infected or exposed since the beginning of the pandemic.
The deal will apply to workers in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, as the union represents more than 52,000 employees in the Garden State.
“Today, UFCW grocery workers are sending a clear message to supermarket chains across the country that this pandemic is far from over, and every CEO must do the right thing by providing the hazard pay that these brave essential workers have earned and deserve as the threat from COVID-19 continues,” Perrone said.
