Since 2015, the Chevrolet Onix has become the best-selling vehicle in all of Latin America thanks to its broad market leadership in Brazil and its growing popularity in the rest of the main South American markets such as Argentina, Chile and Colombia. Now, after the arrival of the second-generation model, the Onix is expanding its success to new regions, and for the first time, it’s GM’s best-selling model in Mexico.
As we reported in our most recent GM Mexico Sales report, the Chevrolet Onix was the automaker’s best-selling vehicle in the Latin country during the month of October, when it sold a total of 2,821 units – the highest number ever recorded by the model in Mexico so far. Notably, this is the first time that the current-generation subcompact car has led the company’s sales in the Mexican market.
As a matter of fact, the 2021 Chevrolet Onix managed to surpass the two models that have traditionally occupied the top two sales spots for GM in Mexico: the Aveo and the Beat. Both are entry-level vehicles, being the cheapest models offered by the company, and arrive in the North American country imported from China and India, respectively. In contrast, the Onix is the most modern car in the brand’s portfolio and is manufactured locally at the GM San Luis Potosí plant.
This puts the Onix in a unique position compared to all the other vehicles that GM markets in Mexico, and a key model to help the company to remain the largest producer and exporter of vehicles in the country. Its role is similar to that of the first-generation Chevrolet Aveo, which was also manufactured in San Luis Potosí mainly for the domestic market and managed to be the best-selling vehicle in the country for five consecutive years.
Mexico is the second largest automotive market in Latin America after Brazil, and together with China, it represents one of the strategic sales objectives that GM hopes to achieve with the second-generation Onix. Since its local launch earlier this year, the 2021 Chevrolet Onix has had a high level of acceptance among the press and Mexican customers that until now had not been reflected in sales due to limitations caused by COVID-19.
Now that the market and production are beginning to stabilize, the Chevrolet Onix has the potential to win over a greater number of customers and further establish itself as GM Mexico’s best-selling vehicle. Available exclusively in a four-door sedan body, the Onix competes in the most popular car segment in the Mexican market, in which the Nissan Versa currently leads by a wide margin – and whose sales include the last two generations combined.
