There is no new stimulus package yet, but that’s not stopping scammers from trying to trick people into thinking there is.
The con artists are using a text message to lure people into clicking a link that will ask for your bank account information, according to a warning from the IRS and the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants.
“You have received a direct deposit of $1,200 from COVID-19 TREAS FUND," the text message says. "Further action is required to accept this payment into your account. Continue here to accept this payment...”
Then it gives a link to a fake web address where you will be asked for your personal information.
Authorities say if you receive this text, you should email the IRS at phishing@irs.gov and include a screen shot of the text message, the date, time and time zone of the message, what number the text came from and your own cell phone number.
Americans have been waiting for news on a new stimulus payment for months.
After Election Day, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would look to pass a new coronavirus stimulus bill when Congress returns to Washington next week.
McConnell, R-Ky., called a new bill “job one when we get back.”
Before the election, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was negotiating with the White House but the two sides were unable to come to an agreement.
