As the nation waits to see when and if we will get a new coronavirus relief package, the IRS says there are still millions of people who may qualify for but haven’t received an Economic Impact Payment (EIP), commonly called a stimulus payment, from the CARES Act.

So the agency is calling Tuesday “National EIP Registration Day,” part of its effort to work with partner groups to make sure those in underserved communities register to receive a payment before the Nov. 21 deadline.

“This special event will feature support from IRS partner groups inside and outside of the tax community, including those that work with low-income and underserved communities,” the IRS said. “These groups will help spread the word about the new Nov. 21 deadline and, in some cases, provide special support for people who still need to register for the payments on IRS.gov.”

Those who may be eligible should use the Non-Filers: Enter Info Here tool to register.

Earlier this fall, the IRS sent nearly 9 million letters, including more than 200,000 in New Jersey, to those who don’t normally file a tax return but may qualify for the payment, urging them to use the tool.

The agency said it’s been working with its partners to translate and make available information about the stimulus payments into 35 languages, including a multilingual effort on social media to spread the word about the registration deadline.

“Our partner groups have been vital to our efforts to reach many underserved communities,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said. “Already, millions of Americans have successfully used the Non-Filers portal and received their Economic Impact Payment. Registration is quick and easy, and we urge everyone to share this information to reach as many people before time runs out on Nov. 21.”

The tool is designed for people with incomes below $24,400 for married couples and below $12,200 for singles who are not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return.

Eligible individuals who register will receive a $1,200 payment if they are single or $2,400 if married and filing a joint return. Those who have children who are 16 and under will get an additional $500 for each child.

The IRS said two weeks after registering, you can track the status of their payment using the Get My Payment tool.

If you don’t get the payment, you will be able to claim it as a credit on your 2020 tax return, the agency said.
