Pride Dairy enjoys first year selling ice cream at the North Dakota State Fair - AG Week

"It's fantastic," said Pride Dairy president and owner Kriss Allard.

With temperatures climbing into the 90s and even flirting with triple digits as the 2021 fair went on, Pride Dairy had plenty of takers at its booth right outside the livestock barns selling ice cream made with North Dakota milk.

Gesturing to the nearby barns, bustling with activity as showmen prepared their animals for competition, Allard said his business is a big supporter of the dairy and livestock industries. Being so close to them on their big days was a good fit.

"Kids coming in here, working hard, getting their livestock ready to show, come up, excited to have ice cream," he said. "Hope they have us back next year, because we're having a blast."

Pride Dairy began in 1930 as Bottineau Cooperative Creamery. Back then, Allard explained, dairy farmers would have a little bit of leftover cream. They'd sell it to the creamery, which would make it into buttermilk, milk and butter. While Pride Dairy no longer bottles milk, they still use products from Cass-Clay, Kemp's and Prairie Farms. And in 1940, the company added the product that it's now known for — ice cream.

The North Dakota State Fair kicked off July 23 and runs through July 31. On Monday, July 26, people were lining up for ice cream long before noon. That day, the official high temperature reached 95 in Minot, according to the National Weather Service.

Pride Dairy had a number of their favorite ice cream varieties available for purchase in cones or dishes, as well as a few flavors of milk shakes. One big draw was the company's Thomas Jefferson Vanilla. The ice cream, made with a recipe written by the third president of the United States, typically is sold only at Mount Rushmore.

"If you can't drive all the way to Mount Rushmore, you can get it right here," Allard said.

Pride Dairy made its first appearance at the 2021 State Fair, and they weren't alone. According to the State Fair, the following foods also were in Minot for the first time:

• Peanut Butter Cup Funnel Cake: A fresh funnel cake topped with warm peanut butter, chocolate, and chopped peanut butter cups was available at Thomsen’s Root Beer, on the Midway across from the Grandstand.
• Chili Dog Pizza: Fresh, house-made dough topped with hearty beefy chili and all beef kosher hotdogs with cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, onions, ketchup, and mustard was available at Leimon’s Pizza, on the Midway across from the Carousel Pub.
• Peanut Butter Squealer: Breakfast sausage baked inside a sweet Belgian waffle and covered with peanut butter sauce and bacon and served on a Stick was available at Waffle Chix, West of Fish & Game Park .
• Bacon Wrapped Chicken-on-a-Stick: Fresh chicken tenders on a stick, wrapped in bacon, coated in a seasoned flour batter and deep fried was available at Sue Sue’s Concessions-All About Bacon, near the front of the Grandstand. Sue Sue's Concessions-All About Bacon is another new vendor this year.
• Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Jalapenos: Jalapeno half stuffed with cream cheese, wrapped with bacon, then deep-fried also was available at Sue Sue’s Concessions-All About Bacon.
• Loaded Mac & Cheese: A combination of some of America’s most loved foods — starting with classic Mac and Cheese topped with your choice of tasty toppers like bacon, shredded pork, taco meat, sausage, and extra cheese was available at B & G Concessions, on the Midway
  
• S’more the Merrier: Large, made from scratch donut; the center of the doughnut is filled with marshmallow fluff, sprinkled with graham cracker crumbles, and finished with a drizzle of Hershey’s drizzle on top. The doughnut was available at Amish Annie Doughnuts, east of the Dairy Barn. Amish Annie Doughnuts was another new vendor at the fair.
