If you had a Facebook account between 2007 and 2022, you have two days left to file a claim for your portion of a $725 million privacy settlement that was agreed to last year. According to the Associated Press, Facebook’s parent company, Meta agreed to the settlement after a lawsuit was filed against the social media giant claiming personal information for millions of users was given away.
The lawsuit stemmed from a discovery in 2018 that the personal information was sold to Cambridge Analytica, a firm with connections to Steve Bannon, who was closely aligned with former President Donald Trump during the 2016 election. Cambridge Analytica paid a Facebook app developer for information on 87 million Facebook users and that information was then used to target voters prior to the election.
As part of the terms of the settlement, anyone who had a Facebook account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022 can file a claim for payment. To file your claim, you can fill out this form online or print out the form and mail it in before the Aug. 25, 2023 deadline.
It is unknown how much money each person will receive as the more people who file a claim, the amount received per person will decrease. It is also unclear when the money will begin being distributed as a court must issue a final approval of the settlement before money can be sent out. If any appeals are filed in the case, that could also hold up the distribution of payments.
