As February draws closer, new SNAP payments will be made to eligible households across all 50 states and territories.
SNAP payments help low-income and vulnerable families with their grocery bills,
as part of the pledge that no American should forgo the right to food.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly referred to as food stamps, is paid monthly to recipients. The amount a claimant receives is based on a number of factors, including income and how many people live in their household.
However, when you get your money depends on the state or territory in which you live. While the funds are provided by the federal government, each state is responsible for setting dates and making payments. According to the Pew Research Center, 12.5 percent of the U.S. population relied on SNAP benefits as of July 2023.
The disbursement date of SNAP varies across states, and is usually based on an individual or household's case number. In Alabama, for example, the date on which money is sent to recipients' accounts varies according to case number. Those who have a case number that ends in 01 will get their benefits on February 4, and those ending in 99 on February 23.
Arizona has a different approach, determining payment dates based on the initial letter of the last name. Those with surnames starting with A, B, or C receive payments ahead of those with X, Y, or Z as the first letter. Elsewhere, in certain states like Alaska and Rhode Island, all SNAP amounts are issued on the same date.
