FANWOOD, NJ – The Fanwood Borough Council at a special meeting introduced a 20-50-102 resolution on Monday evening to establish a temporary emergency budget since a new budget has not been set and expanded the tax payment grace period for taxes, which usually has a ten-day grace period, until the end of the month. Passage of the temporary budget enables the borough to continue operating.
While homeowners have been granted an extension to pay their property taxes, they cannot walk into borough hall to do so because of coronavirus regulations. There are several payment options: a drop off slot at Borough Hall, payment by mail, and electronic payment by credit, debit card or e-check.
“There is a mail slot outside of borough hall where you can put your payment through the slot, and it will go into a secure box. Residents can also mail a check to Borough Hall (75 North Ave.),” said Mayor Mahr, in a phone interview with TAPintoSPF.
“These charges for the electronic payment that are not set up by the borough. The site has been set up as a convenience through a payment processing company,” the mayor added. “It’s 2.95% for payments made by credit card. Debit card payments incur a $3.95 charge, and $1.05 to send an e-check. People should be aware of this; some have been surprised by the fee.”
Payments made after June 1 will be subject to interest.
The council past resolution 20-05-104 to pay for T&M’s engineering and roadway services for needed road work on several streets. About half the cost of the project was picked up by the state through a $400,000 grant to the borough, according to Fanwood CFO Fred Tomkins.
