Updated at 10:30 a.m.: This story has been corrected to say that digital wallets including Google Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Fitbit Pay are supported on DART vehicles.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit is now accepting some contactless payment methods, DART said in a news release Tuesday.
Contactless credit and debit cards issued on the Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover networks are now being accepted on bus, light rail and streetcar vehicles, DART said. Google Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay and other payment methods on smartphones and smartwatches are also supported.
To use a contactless payment method, riders should hold their device on DART GoPass readers, which are on the platforms of rail stations and on DART buses and streetcar vehicles. Riders will see a green check and hear a chime when their payment is accepted, DART said.
The contactless payment system automatically selects the best local adult fare, DART said.
Riders who use contactless payment methods can also benefit from fare capping, a system that makes the discount of monthly passes available to customers even if they can’t pay for it in one transaction, DART said.
Local riders using contactless payment won’t be charged more than $6 (the cost of a one-day pass) per day, and will never spend more than $96 (the cost of a monthly pass) in one calendar month, DART said.
If a rider buys more than one fare a day, they won’t be charged for the second fare until the next day. After a rider spends the equivalent of a monthly pass, they won’t be charged again until the end of that month, DART said.
To benefit from fare capping, contactless payment customers need to register their payment method at GoPass.org.
