Mississippi State Auditor Shad White recently released his department’s audit exception report for Fiscal Year ‘21, which indicated receipt of retroactive salary payments from one former member of the Aberdeen Board of Aldermen and two sitting board members.
The payments stemmed from approved back pay for former Aberdeen Mayor Maurice Howard.
According to the report, demand letters to former Ward 1 Alderman Nicholas Holliday, Ward 2 Alderwoman Lady B. Garth and Ward 3 Alderman Edward Haynes were all paid in full.
The three voted to approve reinstatement of Howard’s salary for the ‘19-’20 Fiscal Year, which totaled $32,008 in unallocated funds, during the first meeting of the current administration.
The previous administration cut his salary twice in 2018, citing his absence from day-to-day responsibilities as the reasoning. Altogether, that board of aldermen reduced his salary by $25,000 per year. After the cuts, Howard’s salary was $19,054.
Demand letters, issued Feb. 2 to Holliday, Garth and Haynes, totaled $9,056.09 each. The audit exception report states the demands were paid in full and returned.
