Between 9 million and 10 million taxpayers remain eligible for COVID-19 stimulus payments worth thousands of dollars, but the deadline is fast approaching.
Through the child tax credit or COVID-19 relief stimulus checks, low-income U.S. citizens may be eligible for up to $3,200 in direct checks, according to the Government Accountability Office. If eligible, all they will need to do is file simplified tax returns, the deadline for which has been extended to Nov. 15.
Unfortunately, the deadline for taxpayers to apply already passed on Oct. 17. Only those who don't pay taxes due to low incomes are still eligible.
From April 2020 to December 2021, Congress authorized the payment of $931 billion to 165 million eligible citizens through direct stimulus payments across three waves in order to alleviate the financial burdens of the COVID-19 pandemic. A person with an income below $75,000 and married couples with a combined income below $150,000 were eligible for all three waves of payments.

Additionally, the child tax credit has benefited an estimated 84% of U.S. children between July and December 2021.
