In most cases, the victim either trusts the fraudster too quickly, or doesn't perform a thorough background check about where their money is going. Jewellery store owner loses Rs 2 lakh

A PTI report reveals that an unidentified man entered a jewellery store in Gurugram on Friday and wanted to purchase gold coind worth Rs 2 lakh. However, he told the store owner that he would make the payment online. The store owner gave the bank details of her husband to the man and he showed her a screenshot that the payment had been completed. Trusting the man, the store owner let him leave the store believing that the payment had been made online. However, it was later found out that no such payment had been credited to the jewellery store owner's account and that the man was a scammer. The owner then approached the police and filed a complaint.

The jewellery store owner Anuradha, a resident of Bhim Garh Kheri, said in her complaint as per the police, “My husband Mukesh Kumar was in hospital then. I shared his bank account details, and the person sent me a screenshot on my WhatsApp saying the payment was successful."

She added that when she checked the account later, she got to know that no such payment was recorded.

“When I called the man for money, he asked me to come to Mewat and later to Nehru Place in Delhi, but never paid the money. Finally I moved to the police,” she added.

How to stay safe

The incident serves as a reminder for everyone to be cautious while carrying out business online, particularly when dealing with unfamiliar customers. Verifying the credibility of potential buyers and adopting secure methods of communication can help protect against falling victim to such schemes. Additionally, it is always better to double check the account once the customer claims that he/she has transferred the money. Simply believing the screenshot should never be enough. You must always check your bank account to see if you have actually received the payment or not.
