The program was launched by Los Angeles County with the intent to allow its residents to "breathe" easier, knowing they are more financially secure. The 1,000 recipients were randomly selected from a pool of eligible applicants.
Recipients in this program do not need to have a bank account to receive the monthly payments because they are distributed through debit cards.
Applications for this program opened on March 31, 2022, and closed on April 13, 2022. Payments started being disbursed in June 2022 and will conclude in August 2025.
