The new MyDTA app makes ticket purchasing easier, safer and more convenient, a news release said Wednesday.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the development and deployment of contactless solutions not only for payment in general, but especially for public transportation," said Rob Fournier, the DTA's interim general manager. "These solutions are not just convenient for our riders, but instill a sense of trust and comfort that their safety — and the safety of our workers — is being taken into account.”
With the new mobile application, riders will be able to purchase mobile fares using one of two apps — either the new MyDTA app or Transit, the DTA's real-time trip planning app.
With Transit, DTA customers have access to an all-in-one experience which combines mobile ticketing with trip planning, real-time bus tracking, and connections to services found within the first-mile and last-mile of routes.
As part of the MyDTA project, 80 validation devices, dubbed "Justride," have been installed across DTA’s bus network. Passengers tap their phones when boarding, which scans their mobile passes and identifies the ticket as valid for use, differentiating between DTA’s peak and off-peak fares, the news release explained.
The validation units are expected to help speed up boarding times, making riding DTA services more efficient and safer for riders and operators. The platform also prepares the DTA to implement equitable fare capping, "which will allow passengers to get the best deal on fares at any time, using tracking to manage the process," the DTA said.
The DTA said it spent months of intensive testing and preparation before the launch of its MyDTA payment app. MyDTA was built in partnership with Masabi and Transit apps. The DTA has used Transit as its recommended trip planning resource for several months.
Fournier added the new app uses the best technology available on the market, making it easy to use, and available to everyone whether they choose to pay by card or cash.
Those who prefer using cash can visit the Duluth Transportation Center information booth on downtown Michigan Street, where DTA staff can look up customer accounts using a handheld scanner and issue mobile tickets or stored value directly to riders’ phones.
Tickets will also be available for cash purchase at several regional and national retailers with locations throughout the Northland. Retail outlets within InComm Payments’ VanillaDirect cash-in payment network will allow riders to pre-load cash onto their MyDTA or Transit accounts.
MyDTA and Transit apps are both available to download free from Google Play and the App Store.
Cash and coin are still accepted, and there are no current plans to eliminate those options, the DTA said.
