Fuddruckers boasts the “world’s greatest hamburger."
Now the hamburger chain’s parent company intends to sell the restaurants.
Luby’s, the Texas company that owns Fuddruckers, announced Tuesday that its board of directors had approved a liquidation and dissolution plan that would include the sale of Fuddruckers and Luby’s Cafeterias.
Luby’s, which is based in Houston, operates cafeteria-style restaurants across Texas (the first opened in 1947). Luby’s first announced a plan to sell in June.
Fuddruckers promote its burgers as “fresh, never frozen," using buns baked on the premises. The restaurant chain was founded in 1979 by Philip Romano, who went on to found Romano’s Macaroni Grill. The first restaurant, located in San Antonio, Texas, was called Freddie Fuddruckers.
Why was it called Fuddruckers? Romano was riffing on Fudpucker Airlines, an aviation in-joke (the company doesn’t actually exist).
There are two Fuddruckers locations remaining in New Jersey — in Parsippany and Roxbury/Succasunna. The chain has restaurants across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Panama.
Magic Brands, the previous owner of the restaurant chain, sold it to Luby’s in 2010.
