The White House and some lawmakers on Capitol Hill want another stimulus payment, check, or prepaid debit card to sent to millions of eligible Americans as part of another coronavirus economic relief package.
It’s a sentence familar to many, as negotiations on the topic have been going on for months now. And yet, as September winds to a close, it feels as if the politicians in Washington, D.C., are no closer to reaching an agreement that approves the IRS to send another round of payments out then they were back in May.
Tuesday brought another round of hopeful news, however, albeit with no timeline as to when such a piece of legislation could be passed by both the Senate and House before it is sent to President Donald Trump for his signiture. Remember that all of that has to happen before the payments can go out, though the turnaround time should be quicker this time around, if it happens, since the IRS learned plenty from when it set up the infrastructure to do this the first time back in the spring.
“The administration does support another stimulus payment," Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said during Congressional testimony on Tuesday, per CNBC.
Added Texas Democrat Al Harris in the same hearing:
“The economic impact payments must be made because the rent must be paid."
Both remarks come as Democrats and Republicans continue to be deadlocked about the finer points of another large financial aid package to boost the economy as the COVID crisis continues. It seems clear that the sides might be able to find common ground on another payment of up to $1,200 for single tax filers and $2,400 for joint or head of househould filers, but there might also be too many other obstacles for an agreement to be reached.
Time is of the essence, too: The House and Senate will soon take a break that leads up to this year’s election, and that recess is now just days away. Their agenda is also filled with a need to pass a bill that avoids a potential government shutdown. One version cleared the House with bipartisian support on Tuesday, but now it must be debated and approved in the Senate, as well.
It continues to mean that, if another payment is coming to eligible Americans, it might not happen until after the election, and could even take until early 2021 to be put into place. By then, whoever controls the presidency and houses of Congress might decide that other issues are more important, or perhaps the global health crisis will slow to the point of making another stimulus check unneccesary, even though millions undoubtedly will still need it.
The wait continues, then, with no end in sight.
“Both sides of the political aisle support more checks, but neither parties have signaled much willingness to seriously compromise on the overall spending of a full stimulus package,” Newsweek notes.
“Democrats have condemned the GOP for failing to present sufficient funding to tackle the pandemic and Republicans have accused Democrats of using COVID to advance their political agenda.”
