Almost 150,000 Alabamians will be receiving letters from the Internal Revenue Service to alert them to the deadline for claiming their Economic Impact Payment.

Nearly 9 million U.S. households either haven’t filed a tax return or provided information to the IRS directly to claim their coronavirus stimulus payment. The payments provided up to $2,400 for married couples or $1,200 for individuals and up to $500 per dependent children under age 17.

“The IRS continues to work hard to reach people eligible for these payments,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. “Time is running out to claim a payment before the deadline.”

In total, letters will be sent to 148,242 Alabamians.

The letters are being sent to people who typically aren’t required to file federal income tax returns but may qualify for the stimulus payment. The letter advises recipients to visit the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool on IRS.gov before the Oct. 15 deadline to register.

The letters – officially known as IRS Notice 1444-A - will be coming from an IRS address. Typically, they will be sent to those who aren’t required to file a tax return because of very low incomes based on forms W-2 and 1099s. Recipients must also be a U.S. citizen or resident alien; have a work-eligible Social Security number; and not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s federal income tax return.

People who fail to file for their stimulus will be required to wait until next year and claim the recovery rebate credit on their 2020 federal income tax return by filing in 2021.
